The local 12G Mentoring group is teaming up with Skillman’s Post to offer a two-day “Let’s Take a Kid Fishing” camp for ages 8-13 on Friday and Saturday, June 19-20, at 3246 N.W. 251st St. in Lawtey.
Snacks and lunch will be provided during the camp, which starts each day at 7:30 a.m. and ends at 6 p.m.
Cost is $175 per child. Only 20 spots are available.
Please contact Edrick Hamilton at 904-364-0868 or [email protected]. You can also send email to [email protected].
Children will have the chance to win awards for biggest fish, most fish caught, best-decorated cork and sportsmanship. Four participants will be selected to go on a chartered fishing trip.
Day one of the camp — at Skillman’s Post — will include activities such as constructing a livewell, customizing lures and corks, learning basic knot-tying skills and how to cast and learning about fish species and weather patterns. Fish-related craft activities will also be offered.
The skills learned during day one will be employed on day two when the children get to go fishing. All fish caught will be released into a pond at Skillman’s Post.
A Pledge-per-Fish campaign offers community members and businesses to pledge $1, $2 or $5 per fish caught. Funds raised will help provide fishing equipment and supplies, educational activities and materials, bait and program resources, prizes and incentives, support for future youth outdoor experiences, possible pond stocking, and related program needs.
General donations outside of the Pledge-per-Fish campaign are accepted as well.
