A Melrose man who threatened a family member with a hammer last fall has been sentenced to two years in with the Department of Corrections followed by two years of probation after entering a no contest plea to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
According to the Bradford County Sheriff’s Office arrest report, William Carlie Dean, 46, was taken into custody Sept. 20, 2025, following a disturbance at a residence on Southeast 8th Avenue in Melrose. Deputies responding to the scene learned that during an early morning altercation, Dean had left the room, returned with a hammer and declared he would kill everyone in the house. He then swung the hammer toward a family member, who fled to his bedroom and locked himself inside out of fear for his life.
The defendant’s prior convictions include robbery with a weapon and drug-related offenses.
As a condition of probation, Dean must complete a minimum of 12 months in an inpatient substance abuse treatment facility upon release from prison. Successful completion of the inpatient program will result in automatic termination of probation. He is also required to complete anger management classes while in inpatient treatment and is prohibited from having any contact with the victim.
