27 days for stealing cell phone

A 26-year-old Lake Butler man was sentenced to 27 days in jail after pleading to stealing a cell phone, candy, and socks from the town’s CVS.

Stacey Deon Smith pleaded to petit theft of less than $100.

According to an arrest report, on October 2, the store’s manager called the sheriff’s office, describing the defendant, and Deputy Jason Lepanto spotted Smith as the 26-year-old was walking along State Road 121.

According to the officer, Smith admitted to taking the phone but was stopped by a store employee after he exited CVS and gave back the device. Lepanto searched Smith and found a pair of women’s socks and chocolate in its original packaging. The CVS worker told the deputy she tried to get the items back from Smith after he walked out the door, but the defendant refused to cooperate.
