5 from KHHS place in top 4 at Dec. 8 wrestling invitational

Keystone Heights High School’s wrestling team competed at the Dec. 8 Westside Kiwanis Christmas Invitational at Jacksonville’s Bishop Snyder High School, with five individuals placing in the top four.

Riley McGorty and Joshua Dowling each earned a second-place finish. McGorty pinned three opponents in finishing 3-1, while Dowling went 2-1 with one pin.

Atreyu Contes went 2-1 with one pin in earning a third-place finish.

Mikey McCall and Henry Carhuayo both went 2-2 in earning fourth-place finishes. McCall had one pin, while Carhuayo had two.

The Indians placed sixth out of 11 teams.

On Dec. 2, Keystone got third-place finishes from Contes and Dowling at the Sandalwood Optimist Tournament Prelims. Contes pinned two opponents and had a major-decision win in finishing 4-1. Dowling pinned five opponents in finishing 5-1.

Jared Goetzman went 3-2 with one pin, one technical fall and one major decision, while Alyx Nichols went 2-2 with one pin and one technical fall.

Keystone wrestled both Florida Deaf and Blind and Union County in a Dec. 6 event hosted by Florida Deaf and Blind.

The Indians defeated the host team 32-31, with the following wins: Contes 7-0, Goetzman pin, Carhuayo 4-2, Arthur Durning 16-9, Nichols pin, Marshall Caprye forfeit and Dowling pin.

Keystone lost 40-30 to Union. Dowling and Marcellus Beem both earned wins by pinning their opponents, while Contes, Goetzman and Ayden Graff were winners due to forfeitures.
