KEYSTONE HEIGHTS— School officials and veterans groups dedicated a monument to fallen heroes at Keystone Heights Junior-Senior High School on Friday Sept. 17.
The memorial honors KHHS 2000 graduate Dick A. Lee Jr., who was killed by a roadside explosive in Afghanistan on April 26, 2012.
Also killed were his bomb-sniffing dog Fibi and Staff Sgt. Brandon Eggleston of Fort Bragg, NC.
Lee’s family said he fulfilled a lifelong dream as a dog handler in the military. He signed up for duty while a senior in high school.
After the ceremony dedicating the monument, a current KHHS student told a Gainesville television station that he plans to follow the fallen hero’s example by serving his country.
“There’s nothing better to do than to help others,” student Brian Rutkowski told WCJB. “Since not only are you helping others as in you know, educating them in the form of coming to school and just talking about it, we are fighting for them.”
