Hampton featured in rural water documentary

Hampton resident CD Hendrix and filmmaker Laura Valtorta.

Southeast Rural Community Assistance Project hired Laura Valtorta and her company, Gatta Films LLC, to make a series of seven short films about rural communities in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Delaware, Maryand and Virginia with water issues resolved by SERCAP.

Her philosophy is that problems faced by the U.S. right now can be solved by focusing on and listening to successes in small towns.

The Storytelling Project outlined by SERCAP aims to help other rural communities resolve their drinking water problems. It highlights communities with strong leaders who have made some progress with their water systems.

The stories end up showing the resilience of the residents, and the unique character of each community. Hampton is no exception. Valtorta and her film crew came to town over the weekend of Dec. 4 and interviewed Mary Lou Hildreth, city clerk/administrator, Bernard Carter, water yard operator, and members of the SERCAP team.  They also interviewed local residents CD Hendrix and Nichole Puls, who described what they liked about small town living.

Hildreth discussed the various grant funding obtained for the city’s potable water system, as well as future projects. Also, the many ways SERCAP has helped the city over the years. After the film is edited, it will be available on the city’s website, www.hamptonfl.com.
