Caleb Crawford and Kale Waters each wrestled his way to a fourth-place finish at the Jan. 8 Joe Bees Memorial Battle of the Border at Yulee High School.
Crawford made it to the semifinals in the 160-pound class before he was pinned by eventual runner-up Jesse Johnson of Yulee. That put him in the third-place match, which was won by Florida High’s Liam Hawkes.
Waters suffered a loss in the quarterfinals of the 113 class, but then won by two pins before losing to Wakulla’s Anthony Fondo in the third-place match.
Prior to the Battle of the Border, the Tigers competed in the District 4-1A duals tournament on Jan. 6 at Clay High School, defeating Tocoi Creek 60-18 in the quarterfinals before losing 74-6 to Clay in the semifinals.
Clay went on to win its fifth consecutive district title.
Danny Thornton, who wrestles in the 195 class, recorded two wins in the tournament for the Tigers. Crawford, Braden Adams (126), Ian Halfacre (132), Rodney Barnett (138), Danté Johnson (145), Jameson Lang (152) and Alexander Cortese (182) all won by pins in the team win over Tocoi Creek.
