GREEN COVE SPRINGS— The Clay County Sheriff’s Office  awarded a Keystone Heights-based deputy with the agency’s Chief’s Award in December.

Deputy Dimitri Santiago played a central role in the arrest of two youths accused of vandalizing the city’s beach park last September.

Santiago, a Keystone Heights-area resident,  said that due to cooperation with city officials, as well as public input and security cameras at the park, the two suspects were arrested within eight hours of the crime.

Vandals have targeted Keystone Heights several times over the past year with most of the incidents occurring at the beach park.  However, the Palatka-to-Lake Butler State Trail, as well as the city’s other parks have also experienced damage.

In June, vandals damaged the restrooms at Keystone Beach Park.
Two suspects were arrested within eight hours of toppling this light pole at Keystone Beach Park in September.
Vandals damaged the Story Walk on the Palatka-to-Lake Butler State Trail in Keystone Heights last May.
