STARKE— Bradford deputies arrested a 35-year-old registered sexual offender after they said he travelled from his Middleburg home to a Starke church in order to see a child he met through social media.
Daniel Jerrod Giglio was arrested on Thursday, Jan. 27 for obscene communication, child cruelty, using a two-way communications device while committing a felony and failure of a sexual offender to register a new social media identity.
The defendant was convicted in 2006 in Clay County for lewd and lascivious battery on a victim 12-15 years old.
According to court papers, Giglio first made contact with the Bradford County girl on Thursday, Jan. 20 through Facebook, with the defendant telling her he needed more followers.
The victim told deputies she video chatted with the defendant on Facebook messenger and Snapchat over a period of three days in the early morning hours, engaging in a role-playing game called Little and Big. She added that she played the role of a child and Giglio assumed the role of her caretaker.
The victim told deputies that during the video connections, Giglio exposed himself to her several times. The pair also engaged in conversations about sexual fantasies on Snapchat.
The victim said that during her conversations with Giglio, she mentioned that she planned to attend a concert at Victory Chapel in downtown Starke. She told deputies that she instructed the Middleburg man not to come.
However, once she arrived at the venue, “she noticed Daniel sitting in the back, right corner of the church and said they made eye contact multiple times,” wrote Sheriff’s Detective Dillon Crews in a warrant affidavit.
After a family member alerted church staff to Giglio’s presence, the Middleburg man was told to leave and to never return.
A witness told deputies that after she saw Giglio in the church, she sat behind him to keep an eye on the man.
“While sitting behind Daniel, (the witness saw that he) looked around the room, and also stared at (the victim),” wrote a deputy in the warrant affidavit. “Daniel was on his phone texting, and at one point pulled up a non-sexual photo of (the victim) on his phone.”
After the concert, the defendant created a new Snapchat account under a different name, and attempted to contact the victim stating, “I think we got caught tonight.”
