KHHS softball team hurt by mistakes in loss to Santa Fe

Host Santa Fe took advantage of miscues to hand the Keystone Heights High School softball team a 5-3 loss on Feb. 25.

The Indians (1-2) scored first when Emma Rogel led off the top of the first by reaching on an error. She stole second and third on passed balls before scoring on Kinley Carlton’s sacrifice fly.

Santa Fe answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning — all scored as a result of two errors and two passed balls.

Keystone made it a one-run game when Rogel hit a two-run single in the second.

Rogel finished 3 for 4, while Abbie Roach was 2 for 3.

Starting pitcher Caitlin Frampton gave up two hits and two walks through four innings.

Madi Mitzel allowed no hits and one walk in the final two innings.

The Indians opened the season with a 7-3 loss at Baldwin on Feb. 22.

Keystone trailed 7-0 before scoring all of its runs in the fifth inning. Roach drove in the first run on a sacrifice fly, while Kiley Channell drove in the second on a double. Channell later scored on a wild pitch.

Channell went 2 for 4 with two doubles.

Carlton and Frampton each hit a double as well.

Prior to playing Santa Fe, the Indians defeated visiting Baker County 4-3 on Feb. 24.

It was a 1-1 game until Keystone scored three in the third. Rogel drove in a run on a double, while Channell pushed one across with a single. An error on a ground ball hit by Ashley Nugent scored what would be the deciding run.

The Indians had only four hits, with Rogel going 2 for 3.

Mitzel pitched a complete game, giving up nine hits and one walk. She struck out four.

Keystone travels to play Nease on Tuesday, March 1, at 6 p.m. before returning home to play Tocoi Creek on Wednesday, March 2, at 7 p.m. The Indians host Eustis on Friday, March 4, at 7:30 p.m. and Fleming Island on Monday, March 7, at 6 p.m. They then travel to play P.K. Yonge on Tuesday, March 8, at 6 p.m.
