STARKE— A judge sentenced a Starke man to 66 days in jail for failing to return a Ford Mustang to Duval Chevrolet after taking a test drive.

Doyle John Havard, 36, pleaded no contest to the Dec. 27, 2021, offense of vehicle theft, possession of drugs and driving with a suspended or revoked license.

According to an arrest report, Havard asked to see a white Mustang at Duval Chevrolet just before noon and then asked to take the car for a test drive.  A worker handed over the keys to the car and asked Havard for his driver’s license.  The defendant replied that he left his license in his vehicle, then got into the Mustang and left.

Arresting officer Hunter Redding wrote in the report that just before 2 p.m., he spotted the Ford moving southbound on Temple Avenue.

Redding and another officer stopped the vehicle.  While searching Havard, the officers found a cigarette box in one of his pockets containing methamphetamine.

Redding added that Havard has five previous convictions of driving with a suspended or revoked license.
