Keystone Heights High School’s Caleb Moncrief won the discus at the Region 1-2A track and field championships, which were held May 5 at Tommy Oliver Stadium in Panama City.

Moncrief had a throw of 149-8 — a personal record — in finishing ahead of Bishop Kenny’s Max Selden, who had a throw of 138-8.

The win automatically qualified Moncrief for the state finals, which will be held Thursday, May 12, at the University of Florida’s Percy Beard Track. The boys discus event will begin at 4 p.m.

Athletes had to place in the top two to automatically qualify for state.

Moncrief also earned an at-large state berth in the shot put with a fifth-place distance of 47-4.5. That event will begin at 1 p.m. at the state meet.

At-large berths were awarded based on a ranking of regional results.

Moncrief was one of three athletes to earn points for top-eight finishes. On the girls side, Kendall Gagnon placed seventh in the javelin with a distance of 98-1, while Kirsten Shaw placed seventh in the long jump with a distance of 15-9.75.

Tyler Griffin ran in two events for Keystone, placing ninth in the 1600m with a time of 4:48 and 14th in the 800m with a time of 2:15.

Shaw competed in another event as well, running a 13th-place time of 18.98 in the 100m hurdles.

Ella Hutchins also competed for Keystone. She was 12th in the 400m with a time of 1:08.
