Bradford High School junior Huishan He received a scholarship after being selected as a Florida High School STEM Scholar as part of the Florida Department of Education’s Sunshine State Scholars program.
Each scholar, along with their parents, traveled to Orlando for a March 31-April 2 event to connect with employers who specialize in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics). They also met with Florida college and university personnel to discuss higher-education opportunities available to them in Florida.
“The Sunshine State Scholar event was a great chance to meet fellow students who have a similar educational drive as I do,” He said. “I was able to also get helpful advice on their STEM careers from adults in STEM.
“It was amazing to win the scholarship that was only awarded to 15 other students out of the 100 students invited. I’m thankful the school gave me the opportunity to experience such a great event in Orlando.”
To be eligible for the scholar program, high school juniors must have an interest in pursuing postsecondary education, demonstrated an interest in a STEM field, have a weighted grade-point average of at least 3.9 and be on track to qualify for the Florida Academic Scholars Award according to the guidelines established by the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program.
