GREEN COVE SPRINGS—
Clay County Commissioner Betsy Condon said the county should not have to pay for sidewalk repairs at Kingsley Lake due to the tree trimming activities of Florida Power and Light.
The county is now repairing the sidewalk along Kingsley Lake Drive. Condon said during the June 14 county commission meeting that additional damage to the walkway occurred when the utility’s contractor parked its heavy equipment on the sidewalk while trimming trees.
She added that it is unfair to taxpayers to foot the bill for the repairs.
“We don’t need to keep spending tax dollars when a contractor is constantly breaking (sidewalks),” she said. “Either get your equipment off the sidewalks or you pay for them.”
County Engineer Richard Smith added that while doing the work, the contractor also rested one of its heavy booms on a drainage culvert, damaging it. “They’ve got some explaining to do,” he said.
