KEYSTONE HEIGHTS— Noah Wasserman of Bluffton, South Carolina, won the Freedom 5k in Keystone Heights Saturday with a time of 15:57.56.
Last year Wasserman’s teammate, also from Bluffton, won the race. Wasserman said one of the members of his high school cross country team has grandparents who live in the Lake Region, and the group comes down for the holiday and race.
The highest placing Lake Region resident: Tyler Griffin of Keystone Heights, placed fourth with a time of 17:48.25.
Of the 138 participants, 63 were from Keystone Heights.
Event organizer Kerry Cooper Collins told the racers before the start that the event is the sole fundraiser for the Jordan Cooper Memorial Scholarship Fund, which awards scholarships to graduating Keystone Heights High School students.
“I truly believe that one person can make a difference, and I see that lived out when I look around and see all of the volunteers here today,” Collins said. “What they all share is a commitment to friendship, service and investing themselves into the community.”
