LAKE BUTLER — The humble beginnings of the Union County Public Library date back to 1988 when the voters of Union County, Florida passed a referendum for a 1/2 mil ad valorem tax for a special dependent taxing district for the purpose of creating a new library. Since then, the library referendum is placed on the ballot every 2 years for continued funding.

Other financial support for the library comes from State Aid to Libraries Grant monies and individual donations.

The public library officially opened its doors on March 1, 1990. UCPL began operation in a 1400 sq ft building, expanded to 3300 sq ft in 1997, and now operates in a 9000 sq ft facility that was completed in 2009. The library currently houses over 40,000 books and materials and offers access to thousands more e-book, e-audio and e-magazine titles. Additionally, the library offers a wide variety of online databases for research needs.

There are several computers available for public use at UCPL, as well as free WIFI access. The library hosts a wide array of programming, including weekly preschool story time, after school programs, summer events for children of all ages, teen & adult programs and programs for senior citizens. There’s something for everyone at the Union County Public Library!
