School districts looking for veterans

KEYSTONE HEIGHTS— The Clay and Bradford County school districts recently said they hope military veterans will consider teaching as a career following their military service.

Both districts pointed to a bill signed earlier this year by Gov. Ron DeSantis that helps veterans access jobs in education by allowing their military service to count toward the requirement for a temporary educator certificate under the mentorship of a certified teacher.

The new law creates a five-year temporary teaching certificate for veterans with four years of active service, an honorable discharge, and 60 semester hours of college credit with a 2.5 GPA. The candidate must also pass a Florida subject-area exam.
