KEYSTONE HEIGHTS— City officials said they are taking over the Lake Region’s annual Halloween celebration, will reestablish its farmers’ market, and may assume control of the community’s Our Country Day fireworks display.

In previous years, the end-of-October candy giveaway: Boo on the Boulevard, has been organized by nonprofits like the Keystone-Lake Region Business Association and the Lions Club.

However, with no organizations willing to take on the project this year, Keystone Heights City Manager Lynn Rutkowski said the municipality would lead the event.

Rutkowski also told city council members during their Aug. 1 meeting that she plans to bring back the city’s farmers’ market in September.

The event, dubbed the Keystone Korner Market, will run on the second Saturday of each month from September through May behind city hall.

The city manager added that vendor participation in the market would be restricted to homemade products.

“So, the Avon representative can’t set up (at the. market),” she said.

An independent, Our Country Day Committee, has produced the city’s annual 4th of July fireworks display for many years.  However, Rutkowski said the committee is reviewing its operations and may choose not to continue.  She added that if the committee decides to disband, the city is ready to take over the event.
