STARKE— Gov. Ron DeSantis ordered state and U.S. flags in Tallahassee and Palm Beach County lowered to half-staff in honor of a Bradford High School graduate.
Susan Slade Whelchel, 77, died on August 5 after battling Alzheimer’s. The daughter of Tom and Flora Slade, Whelchel graduated from Bradford High School and earned a bachelor’s degree from Jacksonville University.
Whelchel was a resident of Boca Raton for 44 years. She served as Mayor of Boca Raton from 2008 to 2014. Prior to serving as Mayor, Whelchel served three terms as Deputy Mayor and was the Vice-Chairman of the Community Redevelopment Agency. She also served on the Palm Beach County School Board for two years.
In a news release, the governor’s office said Whelchel would be remembered as a dedicated public servant and advocate for her community and the residents of Boca Raton.
He ordered the flags lowered at the State Capitol, the Palm Beach County Courthouse and Boca Raton’s City Hall on Aug. 11
