LAKE BUTLER—On Aug. 6, Lake Butler VFW Post 10082 held its annual Back-to-School Bash, an event that provides young people with grade-appropriate school supplies to help them succeed in school and take a little bit of the expense off of parents working to make ends meet in this troubled economy.
Families seeking supplies started arriving about half an hour before the announced beginning of the event at 11 a.m., but Post and Auxiliary members took it in stride and simply started a little early. Parents had been advised ahead of time to call and give Auxiliary President Barbara Fischer a list of the number of youngsters and their grade level so there was plenty to go around.
The event was held as a drive-thru, as it was last year, but that didn’t mean that everyone in each vehicle missed the usual lunch. Supply bags were walked to the vehicle by new Post Commander Willie Wright and post member Eric Carroll and given to the youngsters, then three young volunteers (and the grandchildren of Auxiliary member Annie Pittman) brought out bagged lunches with a hot dog and other goodies.
By the end of the day, the post had given out school packs and lunches to 64 students and their families. As the last car headed away, members were eager to get the post kitchen cleaned up and head home themselves after spending their morning helping the young people of Union County and their families.
