Comer earns silver at IPF Sub-Junior World Championships

Bradford High School senior Courtney Comer took the silver medal for Team USA in the Sub-Junior/76kg women’s class at the International Powerlifting Federation World Championships on Sept. 2 in Instanbul.

Comer finished with a total of 427.5 kg after competing in the squat, bench press and deadlift. That left her trailing Italy’s Asia Franchini, who had a 440 total.

South Africa’s Roechelle van der Merwe was third overall with a 337.5 total.

Comer earned the gold medal in the bench press with a 105 total, finishing 10 kilograms ahead of Franchini.

Franchini placed ahead of Comer in both the squat and deadlift events. In the squat, the two lifters had totals of 167.5 and 147.5, while in the deadlift, Franchini and Comer had totals of 177.5 and 175, respectively.

High school graduate Mahailya Reeves, who lifted alongside Comer at Bradford and Union County high schools, will compete in the Junior/84+ kg women’s class on Sunday, Sept. 4, at 2 a.m. EST.
