KHHS volleyball team places 10th in River City Classic

Keystone Heights High School, playing a schedule in which every team but one is in a larger classification, went 2-3 and placed 10th in the Coastal Division of the Jacksonville Juniors Volleyball Association River City Classic on Sept. 16-17.

The Indians, who are in Class 4A, were the Coastal Division’s Pool 1, which consisted of Class 6A teams Fleming Island, Matanzas and Oakleaf, Class 5A Mainland and Class 3A Bishop Snyder.

Keystone opened the tournament with a 2-1 (25-20, 20-25, 17-15) loss to Fleming Island on Sept. 16. Kiersten Shaw and Kori Jennings had 11 and seven kills, respectively, with Jennings also recording 23 assists. Riley Barry had two blocks, while Jules Padgett had 12 digs.

Fleming Island would go on to place third.

The Indians’ second match was a 2-1 (19-25, 25-19, 15-10) loss to eventual seventh-place finisher Matanzas on Sept. 16. Kamryn Eatmon and Jennings had seven and five kills, respectively, with Jennings also adding 18 assists and three service aces. Sarah Siebert had three blocks, while Kadence Carlton had six digs.

Keystone opened play on Sept. 17 with two straight wins. The first was by a score of 2-0 (25-19, 25-18) against Bishop Snyder. Jennings had 23 assists, while Siebert had seven kills and two blocks. Shaw had six kills, while Barry and Eatmon each had five. Eatmon also had three aces, while Padgett led the team in digs with 10.

Bishop Snyder went on to place 13th.

Jennings had 10 assists in a 2-0 (25-13, 25-20) win over eventual 11th-place finisher Mainland. Shaw and Siebert led the team in kills with four each, with Shaw also recording three aces. Padgett had six digs.

In the ninth-place match, it was Oakleaf defeating Keystone 2-0 (25-17, 28-26). Shaw had five kills and six digs, while Jennings had 13 assists. Siebert recorded five blocks.

The tournament consisted of a total of 44 teams playing in three divisions.
