Michael Bruzzese and Andru Siemer each scored six points in the second quarter as the Keystone Heights High School boys basketball team outscored Tavares 22-5 en route to a 68-31 win on day two of the Lake Area McDonald’s-Kiwanis of Starke Christmas Tournament at Bradford High School on Dec. 20.
The Indians (6-5) got six points and eight defensive rebounds from Seth Gagnon in the first quarter, but it was only a one-point game in favor of Keystone going into the second quarter.
Keystone scored 20 of the first 22 points of the second quarter. Brezzese and Siemer had consecutive baskets. After a Tavares free throw, Bryant Kubisak scored to make it 18-12.
Bruzzese had four straight points on two free throws and a field goal. An offensive rebound by Siemer set up a successful drive to the basket by Zeke Pelham. Siemer scored a basket of his own before Connor Guy knocked down a pull-up jumper to put Keystone ahead 28-12.
The Indians missed their next three shot attempts before Siemer scored on a fastbreak opportunity. Bryce Hollingsworth came up with consecutive steals, one of which led to his own basket, making the score 32-12.
Camarie Williams made two straight baskets for Tavares (0-9) before Keystone’s Garrison Teague scored before the end of the half, sending his team into the break leading 34-16.
Keystone opened the third quarter with a 12-1 run. Teague scored following a Pelham steal, while Gagnon made two free throws. Gagnon then grabbed a defensive rebound and dribbled the length of the court before scoring on a dunk. A Wil Rogel defensive rebound led to a fastbreak basket by Siemer, making the score 42-17.
Pelham drove to the basket for another two points before Gagnon threw down his second dunk of the quarter, putting the Indians ahead by 29 points.
Gagnon and Pelham combined for 13 points in the third quarter.
Siemer led all scorers with 14 points, while Bruzzese and Gagnon each had 13. Kubisak and Pelham just missed double figures with eight points each.
Keystone also got six points from Teague, four points from Hollingsworth and two points from Guy.
Keystone concludes its play in the three-day tournament by playing Suwannee on Wednesday, Dec. 21, at 6 p.m. The tournament’s last game will pit Bradford against Tavares at 7:30 p.m.
North Marion was supposed to play Paxon at 4:30 p.m., but North Marion withdrew.
