Tigers score 7 in 5th, defeat Suwannee 9-5 in baseball

Union County High School’s baseball team took advantage of shaky pitching, scoring seven runs in the fifth inning and defeating visiting Class 4A Suwannee 9-5 on April 10.

Tre’Von Lee, who went 3 for 3, hit an RBI double in the fourth inning to help the Tigers (11-5) enter the fifth trailing 4-2. Preston Bonsall, Ayden Elixson and Erick Lasseter drew bases-loaded walks, while Lee and Devin Diggs were hit by pitches with the bases loaded.

The big fifth inning also featured Blake Agner and Jake Walker each driving in a run.

Ethan Moody earned the win, giving up four runs, eight hits and no walks in six innings. He had five strikeouts.

Carson Rogers threw the final inning, giving up one unearned run and no hits. He struck out two.

Union entered the game off a 5-3 loss at Class 4A Dunnellon on April 7.

Dunnellon scored four runs in the first inning, taking advantage of two hit batters (one with the bases loaded), a bases-loaded walk, two singles and a sacrifice fly.

The Tigers were able to cut their deficit in half with a two-run second. Agner and Lee reached on singles. Lasseter drove in one run on a ground out, while Walker drove in another on a two-out single.

Dunnellon added a run to its total in the bottom of the second on two doubles with two outs.

Union’s final run occurred in the third when Jeremy Miller, who was hit by a pitch, scored on an error.

Clayton Poppell, in an early relief appearance, gave up one run, three hits and no walks through three innings.

Elixson threw three innings of relief as well, giving up no runs, no hits and no walks.

The Tigers travel to play University Christian onTuesday, April 11, at 7 p.m. and will travel to play First Coast on Friday, April 14, at 6 p.m. Union travels to play Bradford on Monday, April 17, at 7 p.m. before then traveling to play Columbia on Wednesday, April 19, at 6 p.m.
