STARKE—Bradford County Fire Rescue said it recently acquired pediatric distraction kits to help first responders treat children.

The kits consist of books, bubble toys, squeeze toys, and other items to direct pediatric patient’s attention away from pain and discomfort.

As part of the Pain Assessment and Management Initiative developed by University of Florida researchers, nonpharmacologic pain management methods are rooted in the idea that the brain can only focus on so much at once. That’s why using distractions to divert attention away from discomfort and onto something positive can be as effective as taking medication.
