Scammers impersonating Union law enforcement

LAKE BUTLER—The Union County Sheriff’s Office said scammers are calling residents claiming to be working for the sheriff’s office and demanding money for alleged missed court dates or jury duty.

“These scam calls even spoof our phone number to make it look more realistic,” the office said in a social media post.” “They will try to convince you to obtain a pre-paid credit card, gift card, digital currency, transferring money or receive your personal information, ‘to post bond’, etc. from you to take your money.”

The agency added that many calls have been traced to overseas locations. Previous attempts to defraud Union County residents included scammers impersonating Social Security and Internal Revenue Service employees.
