Dontae Balfour and his University of North Carolina at Charlotte football team will play Florida at The Swamp in Gainesville on Saturday, Sept. 23, at 7 p.m.

Balfour, a 2021 Bradford High School graduate, led Charlotte in solo tackles with a career-best six in the 49ers 41-25 loss to Georgia State on Sept. 16. He also had one assisted tackle and a pass breakup.

For the year, Balfour, a redshirt sophomore, has 14 tackles (nine solo) in three games.

This is Balfour’s first year at Charlotte after transferring from North Carolina. He played in four games for the Tar Heels in 2022, recording six tackles (five solo) — all in the team’s season opener.

The 6-2 defensive back wears number one — the same number he wore at BHS and which earned him the nickname “Donnie Uno.”

Charlotte opened the season with a 24-3 win over South Carolina State, but has since lost two straight. Prior to playing Georgia State, the 49ers lost 38-20 to Maryland.

The 49ers played in Conference USA before joining the American Athletic Conference this year. The AAC also consists of East Carolina, Florida Atlantic, Memphis, Navy, North Texas, Rice, SMU, South Florida, Temple, Tulane, Tulsa, UAB and UTSA.

Balfour was a first-team Class 4A All-State selection his senior year at BHS, recording team highs in tackles with 77 (75 solo) and interceptions (4).
