Brooker Community School welcomed parents and students at its first open house. The evening began in the auditorium with students performing for the parents. Pastor Jerry Carris, who has been volunteering his guitar skills for “sing-along” with the students, led the chorus.
Parents and students went through the classrooms to meet the teachers and get a taste of what the school day is like for their children. E.J. Hamilton likes to play with the stimulating toys provided for his kindergarten class. Emerson Ogden said she likes Ms. Hersey’s second grade science class because they get to eat the results of the experiments they conduct.
This was also Scholastic Book Week, and the library was stocked with books for sale. Volunteer Wanda Sowell was on hand to collect the funds and assist with questions. She also had supplies available at checkout, such as book markers and erasers. The books were on site for the entire week and students and parents could make purchases before and after school, and at lunch break. The students have an account that can be loaded with credit by the parents so the students can shop on their own.
Josie Barnes is a third grader in Ms. Nash’s class. Reading is favorite subject. She selected some fun reading materials for herself and some to share with her cousin. She chose a boxed package on gems.
Some of the books came with gadgets to go with the story line. Another of Ms. Nash’s third grade students, Bryan Daugherty, picked out a stack of spy adventure books.
The students were enthusiastic about the reading materials they were taking home. Parents were grateful for the school’s community driven nature. Now that the kids have engaging reading material for the quiet times, everyone is gearing up for a spectacular fall festival on Oct. 21.
