Northside Christian Academy’s junior high and varsity volleyball teams each had a season to remember as they were both South Eastern Christian Conference Western Division champions.
Each team went 10-0 in regular-season matches against SECC opposition. The varsity team went on to finish as runner-up in the SECC state tournament.
One could’ve assumed this season would be one of rebuilding for both teams, but that wasn’t the case.
“We lost five girls from each of the teams from last year,” Coach/Athletic Director Todd von Weyhe said. “Yet our girls bonded together and fought to succeed.”
A system that was put into place two years ago is now paying dividends, von Weyhe said.
Of course, for any system to succeed, it needs players who give it their all.
“All the girls have worked very hard and have put forth the effort needed to accomplish such a task,” von Weyhe said.
The varsity team had a 15-2 regular season, losing a total of just six sets in those 15 wins. The junior high team went 12-2 in the regular season. All but three of those 12 wins were 2-0 sweeps.
Chylee Kahakua and Rosalea Norman, who will graduate this year, earned All-SECC honors and All-Tournament honors.
“We will surely miss our seniors next year, but we have some young and talented players moving up in the ranks,” von Weyhe said, adding, “I look forward to the new challenges next year and any new players God brings to our fold, while learning how to overcome the new situations to have another successful year.”
