Gunshots trigger school lockdown

The Union County Sheriff’s Office said a nearby property owner triggered a shelter-in-place order at Lake Butler Elementary School when the man fired two gunshots to chase away birds that were eating his crops.

The agency said that around 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 25, the school’s resource officer was alerted to the gunfire.

“The school took immediate ‘shelter in place’ actions for the protection of the school children,” the office said. “All sheriff’s office units responded and within seconds had a perimeter set up around the school as well as others interviewing neighbors behind and beside the school.”

The office said the property owner was contacted and warned of his actions, and the school returned to normal operations with increased law enforcement presence in the area.
