Keystone Heights High School’s wrestling team competed at the Jan. 13 Wolfson High School Wolfpack Challenge, with Atreyu Contes winning the 106-pound class.
The Indians had a total of eight wrestlers win at least two matches in placing eighth out of 16 teams.
Contes, after a first-round bye, pinned Paxon’s Tripp Guess in 1:17. A pin of Creekside’s Adam Barr in 5:58 put Contes in the championship match, where he recorded a 10-0 major decision over Santana Hernandez.
Henry Carhuayo went 3-2 in the 138 class. He pinned Creekside’s Alex Mashovets in 1:30, but was then pinned in the third period of his match against Menendez’s Matthew Thorn. Carhuayo bounced back, recording a 16-1 technical fall over West Nassau’s Leland Bennett and then pinning Paxon’s Kendrick Palmer in 2:58. His day came to an end when he was pinned one second shy of the end of the first period by Stanton’s Dean Holt.
The Indians had another wrestler go 3-2 in Joshua Dowling, who competes in the 285 class. He pinned Paxon’s Jonathan Holloway in one minute, but was then pinned by Menendez’s Colby Leth. Dowling made quick work of his opponent in his third match, pinning Jackson’s Keyshawn Drummond in 6 seconds. He then pinned Parker’s Jordan Berberena in 2:03 before getting pinned by Creekside’s Cole Anderson.
Jared Goetzman went 2-2 in the 120 class. He started the day by pinning Paxon’s Isabel Flowers in 1:23 before losing by technical fall to Bishop Kenny’s Dylan Lunsford. Goetzman pinned Atlantic Coast’s Ashton Bolden in 32 seconds before losing by a second-period pin to Parker’s Shamar Jones.
Riley McGory pinned Paxon’s Louis Eckles in 4:58 to start what would be a 2-2 day in the 126 class. After getting pinned by Bishop Kenny’s Ethan Warchol, McGorty pinned Bishop Kenny’s Jacob Tice in 2:07. He was then pinned in the first period of his last match by West Nassau’s Dillan Ford.
Adam McGravey went 2-2 in the 126 class as well. He pinned Tocoi Creek’s Adrian Pinlac in four minutes before getting pinned by Wolfson’s Tristan Martinez. McGravey then pinned Atlantic Coast’s Gabriel Ortiz in 3:36 before he was pinned by Atlantic Coast’s Mason Kaye.
Phoneix Contes won his first two matches in the 132 class before he finished 2-2. He pinned Wolfson’s Charles Decunto in 1:41 and defeated Bishop Kenny’s Jordan Hampton 9-3. He then lost by major decision to Bolles’ Akshay Ketty and by 11-6 to Atlantic Coast’s Arjun Lamba.
Alyx Nichols went 2-2 in the 175 class. Like Phoenix Contes, he won his first two matches, recording a 16-1 technical fall over Atlantic Coast’s Jaylen Faulk and pinning Menendez’s Maddox Lehman in 25 seconds. Nichols was then pinned by Creekside’s Jonathan Morrison and Wolfson’s Bryce Frye.
Arthur Durning had one win in the 144 class, pinning Wolfson’s Jack Farrow in 1:17 in the first round. He was then pinned by Creekside’s Liam Downes and Creekside’s Reed Anderson.
Mikey McCall (113 class), Katherine Brossette (132), Seth Fernandez (150), Marshall Caprye (165) and Austin Matthews (190) also competed. Each went 0-2.
