STARKE—A 35-year-old Starke man was arrested after witnesses claimed he knocked a man out on the roadway, ran over the victim’s legs, and tried to strike the witnesses with his vehicle.

David Carlos Johnson was arrested for three counts of aggravated assault.

According to an arrest report, the two witnesses said they saw the victim and Johnson arguing in the middle of Southeast 125th Street and then saw the defendant hit the victim, rendering him unconscious.

“David and an unknown female, who was a passenger in the vehicle, picked (the victim) up and placed him in the listed vehicle,” wrote Deputy Jared Mallard in the report.  “The vehicle proceeded to leave the area with the door open, causing the victim to fall out of the vehicle, running over (the victim’s) legs.”

The witnesses said that when Johnson stopped, they intervened, yelled at the defendant, and tried to aid the victim.

“David entered his vehicle, drove up the roadway, and made a U-turn,” reported Mallard. “(The two witnesses) observed the vehicle make a U-turn, so they attempted to remove (the victim) from the roadway. During this time, David accelerated his vehicle and drove directly at the victims.”

Mallard added that the two witnesses had to quickly remove the victim from the roadway to avoid being hit, and they believe Johnson intended to strike them with his vehicle.

Mallard wrote that he later made contact with the defendant, who appeared to be intoxicated. He added that home surveillance cameras recorded the incident.
