KEYSTONE HEIGHTS—Two residents who applied to be appointed to the city council last October will join the city’s governing body later this year.

Last fall, the city council selected Dan Lewandowski to fulfill the unexpired term of council member Bobby Brown, who resigned for health reasons.

Council members said Lewandowski’s previous experience as a council member from 2015 through 2018 swayed them in selecting the retired Air Force Colonel and current educator for the Seat 3 post.

Councilman Tony Brown was the only council member who favored another candidate: Elston Kussler. Brown added that he voted for Kussler because Brown asked Kussler to apply for the post.

Lewandowski and Kussler were the only candidates to file for council seats during the April 9 election. Lewandowski filed to run for Seat 3, the office he currently holds. Kussler filed to run for Seat 5, held by Steve Hart, who announced that he is not seeking re-election.

Since no one else qualified for the seats, both men will take office after the April 9 election.

Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly reported that the April ballot will also include a proposed amendment to the city’s charter, which would bring the Keystone Heights Airport under the direct control of the city council and convert the airport’s current governing body into an advisory committee. A resolution to put that measure on the ballot failed to pass.
