Girls team member Amia Bethea won the 100m and 200m races, while Deonte Jones factored in two top-4 finishes for the boys team as Union County High School competed at the Ancient City Invitational on March 8 at St. Augustine High School.
Bethea took first in the sprints with times of 12.55 and 26.25 seconds, placing ahead of St. Augustine’s Hannah Johnson in both races. Johnson’s times were 12.6 and 26.67.
Jones ran a fourth-place time of 51.95 in the 400m. He teamed up with Brycen Boney, Bo Thomas and Blake McCoy in the 4x400m relay, with the Tigers finishing fourth with a time of 3:38.
McCoy took sixth in the long jump with a distance of 18-1.25, while the 4x800m relay team of Gavin Smith, Michael Hill, Gavin Sparkman and Dane Johnson had a seventh-place time of 9:52.
Thomas also added to the Tigers’ team score, placing eighth in the 400m with a time of 53.57.
Just missing out on scoring were Dayquan Diston with a ninth-place time of 11.68 in the 100m and C.J. Ivey with a ninth-place distance of 82-0.25 in the discus.
Other boys results were: 100m — Bobo Woodall 11.87, McCoy 12.39, Matthew Rogers 13.86; 800m — Smith 2:20, Hill 2:29, Sparkman 2:32, Johnson 7:11; 1600m — Ashton Bunkley 6:11; 3200m — Bunkley 13:01; discus — Dillon Lane 73-5, Rogers 63-1; and shot put — Jacob Jenkins 30-11.25, Anthony Holmes 30-3.
Union also had the following girls results: 100m — Holly Halfacre 14.7, Faith Sirmones 14.77, Mia Odum 17.11, Mari Williams 17.35, Daina Smith 17.8; long jump — Halfacre 12-1.25, Sirmones 11-2.75, Odum 10-8.75; discus — Taleyah Smith 70-4, Williams 38-7; and shot put — Smith 26-5, Briena Haight 25-3.25.
