Union County High School’s baseball team outscored three opponents 21-2 in going undefeated at Prospect Select’s High School Classic, which was held March 18-20 in Viera.
The Tigers (7-6) and Cardinal Newman were the only teams to go 3-0.
On March 18, Union scored four runs each in the second and third innings in defeating Port St. Lucie 9-1.
Riggs Davis and Preston Bonsall each hit an RBI single on a 1-0 pitch in the second, which also saw Trenton Klein hit an RBI double on a 1-0 pitch. Erick Lasseter drove in the fourth run on a ground out.
The Tigers had the bases loaded with one out in the third when Davis drove in a run on a sacrifice fly. Bonsall, after falling behind 0-2 in the count, hit a 2-2 pitch for an RBI single. Klein hit a ground ball that scored one run, while an error on the play allowed another runner to cross home plate.
Bonsall, who went 3 for 3, and Davis finished with two RBI each. Klein, Lasseter and Landen Miller each had one RBI.
Kacen Thomassen went 3 for 3 as well as starting on the mound. He threw five innings, giving up one run, three hits and one walk, while striking out four.
Clayton Poppell and Bo Wilson each pitched an inning, with Poppell giving up one hit and Wilson giving up none.
Davis and Klein drove in two runs each in the Tigers’ next game, a 7-1 win over Lake Nona on March 19.
Klein drove in the first two runs with a sacrifice fly in the first and a single in the third. A Davis ground out scored a run in the fourth to put the Tigers ahead 3-0.
It was 3-1 when Union scored four in the sixth. Davis hit an RBI double, while Ayden Androlevich hit an RBI single. The Tigers also scored runs on a balk and an error.
Lasseter was the only batter with multiple hits for either team, going 2 for 4. He also earned the start on the mound, giving up one run, five hits and no walks in five innings. He struck out four.
Devin Diggs pitched the final two innings, allowing no hits and striking out four.
Three pitchers combined to give up no runs in the Tigers’ 5-0 win over Evangelical Christian on March 20.
Androlevich started, allowing three hits and one walk in five innings. He struck out three.
Bonsall and Baler Waters each gave up one hit and no walks in pitching one inning each.
Union scored two runs in the second, with Diggs hitting an RBI single and Bonsall drawing a bases-loaded walk.
The Tigers had two outs with no one on in the third before scoring another two runs. Thomassen and Diggs both walked before Androlevich hit a two-run single.
Androlevich’s single was one of just four hits for the the Tigers.
Union, which has won four in a row, hosts Oakleaf on Tuesday, March 26, at 7 p.m. and will travel to play West Nassau on Thursday, March 28, at 7 p.m. The Tigers then travel to play Williston on Tuesday, April 2, at 6:30 p.m.
