The Worthington Springs Town Council may use a $600,000 Small Town Community Block Development Grant to expand parking at the town’s community center.

Town Clerk Pat Harrell said that several years ago, the town was awarded the money and had earmarked the funding to pave streets in the Worthington Springs Trailer Park.

However, when questions arose about the ownership of the streets and easement proceedings were delayed, town leaders decided to redirect the funding to a less controversial project.

Harrell said the town’s community center is rented virtually every Saturday and often on both days of the weekend for weddings, baby showers, and receptions.

“Sometimes they’ll get married out in the gazebo and then have the reception in the community center,” she said.

The clerk added that the town purchased the lot behind the facility several years ago and may use the grant to add 15 spaces to the community center’s parking area.

Harrell also said that when Kinetic by Windstream completes its 5G project in the Worthington Springs area, the town plans to upgrade its cameras at Chastain-Seay Park.

The clerk said trespassing and vandalism continue to plague the facility, and town council members hope the upgraded cameras with internet connectivity will deter further damage to the park or help law enforcement catch the criminals.
