A Hampton man with two previous battery convictions was sentenced to 18 months in prison after pleading to attacking his girlfriend.

Wendell Lee Chastain, 39, pleaded to felony battery.

According to an arrest report, the victim told deputies Chastain punched her in the face and scratched the top of her head during an argument while they were both in a vehicle on County Road 121 north of Hampton, near the CSX railroad tracks.

“She also stated that the bruises on both her arms were from Wendell yesterday,” wrote a deputy in the report.

The victim claimed that in previous incidents, Chastain broke her fake teeth in half and bit her on the nose.

“(The victim) and Wendell were in a six-month romantic relationship,” wrote the officer. “It should be noted that both parties were intoxicated at the time of the incident.”

Chastain’s previous convictions include attempted aggravated battery, felony driving while license revoked, battery on a law enforcement officer, DUI, driving with a suspended or revoked license, battery, burglary, and grand theft.
