Brooker Community School would not exist without the local support required to get it up and running. Without the contributions of time and energy by volunteers, students at the small school would be missing out on a whole lot of local talent.

That was evident as Principal Felecia Moss called the names of volunteers and pointed out their areas of service to the school. Recipients were given a thank you card and a student-made book marker.

Jean Barnes, retired PE teacher, was honored for bringing physical education activities to the school. Another volunteer PE instructor is John Eagle, a former Brooker student from the 1990s who attended K-sixth grade. Pastor Singleton is a consistent helper with general office tasks and recruiting new students from the Monteocha area. Mr. and Mrs. Sowell were called Ghostbusters because they seem to appear out of nowhere to jump into action wherever needed. Master Mason Ted Barber of Pine Hill Lodge was praised for bringing civics lessons to the students. A couple of dedicated parents were given appreciation as well.

The lunch was a cold plate of sandwiches, chips, salad, fresh fruit cup and food service manager Dora Broome’s famous desserts.

A special feature of the Brooker Community School is the intimate nature of a small school in a small community. As a public charter school, it is free and open to students from any district in Bradford County and even in neighboring counties. The school will be adding sixth grade in the coming year. There is plenty of space for new students. Registration is now open.

The Sowells have been dubbed “Ghostbusters” for appearing out of nowhere to “fill holes” in volunteering.
