The former director of the Bradford County Library remains behind bars after a judge denied his request to reduce his $80,000 bond.

Robert Eugene Perone, 61, of Starke, was charged with grand theft and illegal use of a credit card after Bradford Sheriff’s detectives accused the former county employee of stealing over $12,000 from a nonprofit organization that supports the library.

In a motion to release the defendant on his own recognizance or reduce the bond, Perone’s attorney, Assistant Public Defender Eddie L. Edwards, wrote that his client is indigent and cannot post the $80,000 security. Edwards added that if the bond were reduced, Perone would remain at his Starke residence, remain in contact with his lawyer, and attend all court appearances.

Judge James M. Colaw denied the request.
