Tigers advance to District 6-Rural semifinals

Union County High School’s volleyball team defeated sixth seed Fort White 3-0 (25-8, 25-9, 25-17) in the quarterfinals of the District 6-Rural tournament on Oct. 14.

Stats weren’t available at the time of this posting.

The third seed Tigers (15-8) will play second seed Lafayette (16-3) in a semifinal match on Tuesday, Oct. 15, at Dixie County High School. If Union gets by the Hornets, who are second in the Florida High School Athletic Association/MaxPreps Rural Class power poll, it will play top seed Branford (22-3) or fourth seed Dixie (11-12) for the championship on Thursday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m. at Dixie County High.

Union ended the regular season with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-17) loss at Branford on Oct. 8. Branford is the top team in the FHSAA/MaxPreps Rural Class power rankings.

Indi Knox and Jailyn Simmons had 12 and 11 kills, respectively, with Simmons adding a team-high three blocks. Layla Barber had 10 kills, while Morgan Smith had seven.

Kamryn Southerland recorded 27 assists and 10 digs.

Bella Johns led the team in digs with 11. The Tigers also got nine from Knox and seven from Bayley Staier.

A previous post about the Tigers’ 3-0 wins over P.K. Yonge on Oct. 1 and Bradford on Oct. 7 didn’t have stats, which weren’t available at the time.

Against P.K. Yonge, Union got 10 kills each from Barber and Simmons, while Knox had eight kills to go along with 10 digs.

Southerland and Abby Williams had 10 and nine assists, respectively, with Southerland also recording eight digs and four service aces.

Johns and Staier each had seven digs, while Smith had two blocks.

The win over Bradford saw three players reach double digits in kills: Simmons with 16 and Barber and Knox with 10 each. Smith added seven kills.

Southerland and Williams had 14 and 10 assists, respectively.

Johns led the team in digs with nine, while Barber and Southerland each had five.

Simmons also recorded four blocks, while Barber had two.

Knox recorded a team-high aces with three.
