The 7th Annual Empty Bowls Event occurred on Tuesday, January 14, at the Keystone Heights Woman’s Club.
Lake Area Ministries hosted this event to benefit the food pantry. It made a remarkable comeback last year after being on hold for a few years due to COVID-19.
What are Empty Bowls?
Karen Lake, President of Lake Region Kiwanis said, “It’s a model based on a simple meal of soup, bread, and crackers like a hungry person might experience in a soup kitchen. The added benefit is that patrons select an empty, handmade bowl to symbolize hunger in our community to take home with them.”
This year, the Woman’s Club, Mission of the Dirt Road, the Crafters at Keystone Global Methodist Church, and the Kiwanis Club collaborated to create several handcrafted food bowls.
Each of these bowls serves the community, particularly neighborhoods experiencing food insecurity.
The event featured an assortment of beautifully crafted bowls, various delicious soups, bread, and five delightful cakes for a silent auction.

Thanks to generous donations, there were no expenses related to the fundraiser, allowing organizers to raise $4,890 for Lake Area Ministries.
“A heartfelt thank you to the community for all your support. Without your help, we couldn’t feed over 19,000 people each year.,” said Tanya Dennis, Lake Area Ministries Director.
