On Saturday, February 22, The Garden Club of the Lakes hosted its seventh annual Junior Plant Day at Bryan’s Ace Hardware in Keystone Heights.

The store supplied nearly all the materials needed, including plants, seeds, pots, and soil. Six stations were available, each offering unique items to learn about. These included a bird feeder station, a pinecone bird feeder station, a radish necklace station, a “Pot Me Up” station, a small greenhouse station, and a popular favorite, the ice cream cone seed station.

Jennifer Nichols, a local shopper and mom to Lucas, brought her son in because he loves gardening. She was excited for him to learn and participate in their offered activities.

“We came to get vegetables, and Lucas was interested in participating. He loves specifically planting anything from seed and watching it grow. Probably just more about what other plants he can grow,” Mrs. Nichols said.

The Garden Club of the Lakes was founded in 1959 at the home of Mrs. L.E. Harris.

Over the years, the Garden Club has received recognition from the local government, the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs, and the National Garden Club for its award-winning conservation projects.

Jackie Host, chair of the Garden Club of the Lakes, said, “The Garden Club’s mission is to educate future generations so that we will have gardeners. We need people to continue growing and learning about plants because we need our farmers, and we like to eat, so we need to keep our farmers.” To learn more about the Garden Club of the Lakes, visit gardenclubofthelakes.org.
