Bradford County Commissioner Carolyn Spooner thanked all of the participants, donors and volunteers following the completion of the second annual Cancer Awareness and Education Walk held last Saturday. In addition to spreading awareness and education, the event supports the Shirley Livingstone Brown Scholarship Foundation, which Spooner founded in memory of her sister, a nurse who died of breast cancer. The scholarship helps fund further education for those seeking a degree in the medical field for a career dedicated to service.

Several churches assisted with plans and refreshments, including Mt. Pisgah AME, Ebenezer Baptist, Greater Allen Chapel AME and Antioch Baptist. Thanks were also extended to the Florida Department of Health in Bradford County, the Bradford County Commission, Bradford County Sheriff’s Office, Bradford County Fire Rescue and the Downtown Grill.

Spooner said donors raised nearly $4,000 toward the $5,000 goal.
