A Lake Butler woman remains behind bars at the Bradford County Jail after she pleaded not guilty to forgery, and a judge reduced her bond from $25,000 to $10,000.

In May 2023, Starke police accused Marie Evette Black of altering a check from her former employer, a Starke physician’s office, and cashing the note at a Starke pawn shop for $875.

The State Attorney’s Office accused the 44-year-old of forging and cashing another check from an individual the previous month.

In May 2024, prosecutors obtained an arrest warrant for Black, who was arrested on the charges on May 27, 2025.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges on the day of her arrest, and on June 4, Circuit Judge James M. Colaw reduced her bond by $15,000.
