Sixty golfers hit the links at Quaile Heights Country Club in Lake City on Saturday, June 21, to support Union County’s Pop Warner youth football program.
League President and Union County Commissioner Mac Johns organized the event. During a board of county commissioners meeting last week, he told his fellow commissioners that fundraising for the league allowed him to purchase $9,000 in new equipment for the youth football organization.
During the shotgun-start scramble, Johns said he decided to step in and lead the league after it had dwindled to one team with no cheerleaders.
So far this year, enough players for three teams have signed up for the upcoming season.
Johns said fundraising fills the gap between what most parents can afford to pay and the program’s costs. He added that his league charges parents around $150 per player, which only covers the price of a uniform and equipment. Pop Warner registration fees and insurance add $40 to the cost.
Team Crawford, consisting of Taylor Crawford, Tammy Carter, Ryan Crawford, and Karlee Gainey, took first place in the scramble with a score of 49.
Team Thompson, consisting of Wyatt Thomas, David Thomas, Nolan Julius, and Walker Thompson, came in second. The foursome donated their $300 prize to Union County Pop Warner. They scored 51.
Other teams participating were The Gilmores, Florida Septic Services, North Florida Technical College, Team Hole in Won, The Taylor Swifties, Swift Creek Trucking, Marshall Rawson for Florida State House District 10, Union County Babe Ruth, Springtown Automotive, Dampier Septic and Well, Pipeline Contractors, and Showcase Signs.

Gainey, Mike Tew, Brian Dicks, David Tew, and Taylor Crawford won closest to the pin competitions at various holes. Trevor Holtzendorf shot the longest drive. Marla Williams and David Tew each won $100 for being the best-dressed.
