Prints found on food packaging

Justin Harris, 34, of Keystone Heights, was arrested by Clay deputies on July 31 for unarmed burglary of a dwelling.

According to a January 18, 2020, affidavit for an arrest warrant, the victim told deputies that his Polaris ATV, valued at $15,000, had been stolen from an attached garage.

“The side door of the garage had been pried open, and the keys for the Polaris were taken from (the victim’s) bedroom,” wrote an investigator. “A plastic gun box was also reported missing, and several food items had been taken from his kitchen pantry, which were found in his garage on the floor where the side-by-side had been.”

Two days later, deputies responded to a call on Silver Sands Circle about an overturned ATV with the driver of the vehicle fleeing on foot.

“The side-by-side was confirmed by the victim as being his, and it appeared that someone had recently painted it white, as the paint was still wet,” wrote the responding deputy.

The complainant, Justin Buchler, told deputies that he could not identify the rider, who he said was painting the side-by-side white with a shirt wrapped over his face.

However, on February 26, 2020, both Buchler and Harris were arrested in Putnam County for burglary.

“Buchler was interviewed at the Putnam County Jail, to which he admitted that the masked person he saw in his yard painting the side by side was Harris,” wrote a deputy. “He stated that Harris was high on drugs and driving the side-by-side erratically, and that was why he crashed it on the road. Buchler stated that he did not want to get Harris in trouble over the burglary, and that was why he initially denied knowing the masked person. Buchler denied any involvement with the burglary or theft.”

A Clay detective also reported that an FDLE crime lab matched prints found on a cheddar pretzel bag and a Cosmic Brownies box that were taken from the victim’s kitchen as belonging to the defendant.
