It was more than a race. It was a heartfelt tribute to John Wesley Gillenwaters, a beloved personal trainer from Titanup Fitness I Jacksonville Beach and Nocatee.
On Sept. 28, 19 Bradford County natives traveled to New York City to run in Gillenwaters’ memory at the American Brain Tumor Association’s Breakthrough for Brain Tumors 5K, which was held at Pier 84 along the scenic Hudson River.
The event raised $298,000 for research and support programs. Participants donned team shirts emblazoned with “John Wesley’s Titans,” a fitting homage to Gillenwaters’ inspiring motto: “Titans are just built different.” This not only encapsulates his approach to fitness, but the strength he exhibited throughout his life and during his battle with cancer.
Gillenwaters’ life journey took a tragic turn on Aug. 24, 2024, when he was diagnosed with astrocytoma grade 4 after multiple visits to the ER for persistent headaches. Following an urgent surgery to remove the tumor on Aug. 25, he faced the challenges of his illness with remarkable strength and resilience. Unfortunately, after a courageous battle, Gillenwaters lost his life on May 4, 2025, at the age of 30.
Elizabeth Nazworth, who is Gillenwaters’ aunt, organized the 5K team to honor her nephew’s legacy. The camaraderie and determination displayed by the team highlighted the deep connections within the Bradford County community and its commitment to raising awareness and support for brain-tumor research.
As they crossed the finish line, participants not only celebrated their physical achievements, but the enduring spirit of a young man whose impact will be felt far beyond the finish line.
The event served as a reminder of the importance of community, resilience and the ongoing fight against brain tumors.
