Mary Ann Clawson, painting Florida’s soul

Mary Ann Clawson

Special to the Monitor

Mary Ann Clawson is an accomplished painter with over twenty years of experience. Her dedication and passion shine through in every piece of her artwork. This October, she was recognized as the featured artist at

Mossman Hall in Melrose.

“It’s just kind of like in my soul,” she said. “I like to preserve kind of the way it was, and I’ve been painting with the Florida Highwaymen, and I love their style.”

From a young age, she developed a passion for painting. While living in Georgia, she seized the opportunity to teach students ranging from pre-K to 12th grade. After gaining valuable experience in the classroom, she confidently opened her own art studio, Painted Planet, over 17 years ago.

If you asked her about her preferred mediums, oils and acrylics, she would say they allow her to vividly capture the breathtaking beauty of Florida landscapes in her paintings.

“I’ve always been artistic, and when I was a little girl, I wanted to be an art teacher. I followed my dream, and I have a motto that I’ve always taught my children: I believe that everybody has the gift of creativity, because we were made in the image of God. He was our creator, and if we are in his image, then we are created to create as well,” she said.

Today, she teaches children’s drawing and painting classes, as well as paint parties. Her primary focus is on teaching other artists, and she now enjoys dedicating more time to painting, thanks to the opportunity.

Clawson teaches classes at Mossman Hall for children on Wednesday, focusing on drawing and painting from 3:30 to 4:30, and by appointment.
