Daisy Hubbard and Kadence Massey combined for 11 second-half points as the Keystone Heights High School girls basketball team outscored host Union County 19-9 for a 37-18 win that improved the Indians to 2-0.
Consecutive baskets by Iamorieah Williams gave the Tigers (0-2) an early 6-4 lead, but the Indians tied the score when Hubbard converted a layup off a Massey assist. Grace Keaton then scored off a steal to put Keystone up by two.
Williams’ third basket of the first quarter tied the score at 8-8, but Keystone went into the second quarter ahead 9-8 off a Hubbard free throw.
Back-to-back three-pointers by Union’s Latoya Hampton put the Tigers up 14-11. Keystone then scored six of the next seven points — all coming off layups by Rigby Morford off Keaton and Massey assists and a Massey inbounds pass.
It was a big quarter for Morford, who had 10 points, helping the Indians go into the half leading 22-16.
Massey and Raven Bastin each had a basket to put Keystone up 26-16 in the third quarter. After a free throw by the Tigers’ Hampton, the Indians got a rebound putback from Hubbard. Hubbard and Massey combined to make three free throws before Arianna Denmark scored off a rebound to send Keystone into the fourth quarter leading 33-18.
Bastin, Hubbard, Massey and Morford each had a basket in the fourth quarter.
Morford led all scorers with 14 points, while Hubbard and Massey had eight and six, respectively. Keystone also got four points each from Bastin and Keaton, two points each from Denmark and Alexandra Papaioannou and one point from Maria Papaioannou.
Hampton, who had a three-pointer in the fourth quarter, led the Tigers with 10 points. Williams added nine points, while Brooke Hunt and Brianna Taylor had five and one, respectively.
Keystone hosts Duval Charter on Tuesday, Dec. 2, at 6 p.m. and will travel to play Baldwin on Friday, Dec. 5, at 6 p.m.
Union travels to play Hawthorne on Thursday, Dec. 4, at 6 p.m. The Tigers then return home for games against West Nassau on Monday, Dec. 8, and Hawthorne on Tuesday, Dec. 9. Both games tip off at 6 p.m.
