Heritage Commission preps for Christmas wreaths, other projects

Members of the Keystone Heights Heritage Commission discussed plans for their upcoming Christmas wreath project and their effort to catalog historic artifacts during their November 18 meeting.

Chair Deirdre Murphy led the discussion about the commission’s annual wreath project, in which the city advisory panel loans Christmas wreaths to downtown businesses.

Murphy said she and her colleagues would also launch their inventory project on January 17, in which the commission will record and organize historical artifacts from Keystone Heights. She added that members will be keeping an eye out for artifacts that can be used during upcoming commission events, such as the pop-up museum and the observance of the city’s role in the Chautauqua movement in the 1920s.

“We’re just trying to make a dent in the inventory that we have and we’re going to tag it, label it, and then anything at that time that we know we will need for our Chatauqua event and the pop-up museum, we’re going to tag it so that it’ll be easy to identify in May when we go to take things over to the pavilion,” she said.

Murphy also updated other commission members on a state historical marker describing the city’s founding and early years. She said no progress was made in November, but she expected the project to move forward in December.

Lastly, commissioners briefly talked about the upcoming Yesterday’s Festival at the Mike Roess Gold Head Branch State Park in January.

That event, held on January 25 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., will showcase vintage steam engines and tractors, cast iron cooking, and historic reenactments.
